About Cities of Europe
Cities of Europe is an independent hobby project built by Nick. It makes official European city data easier to inspect without hiding differences in geography, vintage, or source.
Why it exists
I wanted a straightforward way to compare European cities using published figures. Most quick comparisons mix city proper, functional urban area, country, survey area, and climate-grid values as if they described the same place. They do not.
Cities of Europe keeps those grains separate and labels every figure with its indicator, reference year, unit, source, and coverage note. The aim is modest: make the official data easier to read, compare, and check.
What the site covers
The current release publishes selected European city profiles, country directories, population tables, climate tables, a comparison tool, and a random-city tool. The data comes from Eurostat city statistics, GISCO geography, the European Environment Agency, and Copernicus datasets described on the sources page.
Coverage is not uniform. A blank value remains blank. Country averages do not fill city gaps, and the site does not turn partial indicators into claims about the "best", "cheapest", "safest", or most liveable city.
Who operates it
I'm Nick. I work in software and data tooling, and I run Cities of Europe as a hobby project. Some of my other projects are listed at nmajor.com/projects.
I am the operator of this site, not a statistical authority. The methodology documents how source records become published pages. If something looks wrong, use the corrections process.
Independence
Cities of Europe is independent. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by Eurostat, the European Commission, the European Environment Agency, or Copernicus. Those organisations do not review or approve this site's use of their data.
